Suicide Helpline for Farmers
The Indian farmers are going through a difficult crisis today. They have to face a lot of issues such as loan repayment to the banks which is the major cause of suicide among farmers.
The year 2022 has seen 1,875 deaths between the months of January to August in the state of Maharashtra alone. The city of Aurangabad was the second and the most affected city, with 661 suicides committed by farmers in 2022.
It has been observed that since 2019, about 5,000+ farmers have committed suicide in the state of Maharashtra alone.
Another issue that haunts the farmers is deadly droughts due to poor artificial irrigation facilities and inadequate rainfall making crop failure more common. The main cause of suicide in South India is a combination of social problems such as interpersonal, financial difficulties and pre-existing mental illness. A recent study shows that almost a third of suicide survivors (family members left behind) had suicide ideation in one month prior to assessment.
Objective
During our research we noticed more than 10,000 farmers suicides occurred in the year 2021 in India.

Signs of Suicidal Ideation
Many farmers find it difficult to cope with the distress that accompanies their work since everything is highly dependent on the climate and the changes in its conditions.
At such times you might hear them say that they feel dejected and want to end their suffering by taking a drastic step. There can be a sudden change in their mood in case they are abusing any type of drugs or alcohol to cope with the situation ahead.
Some of us might observe them wanting to be left alone. They withdraw from social interactions. It is observed through our research that many farmers start giving away their valuable possessions and belongings to their family members and indirectly begin saying their goodbyes to their families.
All of these symptoms accompanied by frequent mood swings, constantly being preoccupied with the thought of suicide or self-harm along with changes in eating patterns and normal routine are the signs that one should look out for in the farmers around them.
- Talk about suicide such as "I'm going to kill myself", "I wish I was dead", "I wish I was never born".
- Withdrawal from social contact
- Increasing use of alcohol, drugs or other substances
- Changing normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns
- Being preoccupied with death, dying or violence
- Letting go or putting things in order when there is no other logical explanation
- Saying final goodbyes to people
- Having extreme mood swings
- Procuring harmful equipment that can help commit suicide
